Synermed CEO Appointed to California Association of Physician Groups Board of Directors

James Mason Chosen to Represent the Needs of Medi-Cal Providers

LOS ANGELES – January 22, 2009 – SynerMed, Inc., the largest Medicaid managed service organization (MSO) in the state of California, today announced that president and chief operating officer, James P. Mason, has been appointed to the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG) Board of Directors.
An active member of CAPG for the past decade, Mason brings 15 years of broad health care experience to his position on the board, which includes involvement with the development of Medicare and Medicaid managed care initiatives throughout the State of California. In both his past and present roles, Mason has collaborated closely with various players in the California health care system – patients, providers, health plan executives and officials responsible for government programs – and has seen firsthand the detrimental effects the broken managed care system has had on physicians and patients throughout the state.

"As a respected Medicaid expert, and the leader of SynerMed, a company that has evolved to create successful synergies between the various stakeholders in California’s health care system, James will provide invaluable insight and a fresh perspective as CAPG continues to support reform that will provide coordinated treatment and comprehensive coverage to all Californians,” said Don Crane, president of CAPG who personally recommended Mason for the position, based on his Medicaid relationships and extensive experience with state-run programs.

During the time that Mason has been responsible for the management and strategic direction of SynerMed and its various divisions, SynerMed has grown from one client and a few hundred members to managing health benefits for 450,000 members through its customers. Personally and professionally dedicated to the development of innovative solutions to improve cost, access and quality of care for all, Mason is also an active patient and physician advocate.

"CAPG is an important voice - representing the interests of California’s health care providers as the state, and country, work toward reforming the system and providing access to health care for everyone," Mason said. "I look forward to working with the CAPG board and member base to ensure that Medi-Cal providers throughout the state are accurately represented as we work toward building a health care system that is both accessible and sustainable."
